The Winter Soldier, also known as James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, is a Marvel Comics character with a complex history. Originally Captain America's loyal friend and sidekick during World War II, Bucky was presumed dead after a mission gone wrong.
In reality, he was recovered by Soviet forces, brainwashed, and enhanced with a cybernetic arm. He became a highly skilled and ruthless assassin, known only as the Winter Soldier, carrying out covert operations for decades. He was placed in cryogenic stasis between missions to prolong his usefulness.
Captain America's reemergence eventually triggered fragmented memories in the Winter Soldier, leading to a slow and difficult process of regaining his true identity as Bucky Barnes. He then wrestled with the guilt of his actions under Hydra's control and sought redemption. Often allied with Captain America, he also walks a path as an anti-hero, working to atone for his past.
